President's Message (2018)

President's Message by BCCOCO president Eric Holcomb (elected Nov. 2012, Dec. 2013-2015, March 2017 and Jan. 2018)

December 2018 — Greetings!

Sorry – I just remembered that the December coin club meeting is scheduled for a week early this year, on Tuesday December 4 (1st Tuesday). This meeting will be at the Redmond location, assuming we don’t have any more major fire outbreaks or bad (icy or snowy) weather.

Location: PatRick fire facility, 1199 NE Hemlock Avenue, Redmond, OR, at 6:30 p.m. (room usually opens at 6:00 p.m.).

This meeting is our annual Christmas/holiday potluck, so please bring some hot or cold food item to share. Typically the club supplies meat, drinks and supplies. If I receive any updated info from the folks in Redmond before Tuesday, I’ll let you know. Paul may also give us additional information about the U.S. Mint medals commemorating the Native American Code Talkers, and I’ll have some left-over old numismatic books for sale.

Nominations and elections for 2019 club officers will also happen at this meeting.

As always, we’d like to have a good "show & tell" and auction at just about every meeting, so please bring an item for each, or bring one item you'd like to sell and show it first so people know what it is before the auction at the end of the meeting. I'll have my camera ready to photograph your item. There will be an extra prize to show & tell participants in a random drawing. To receive a ticket for this special drawing, you must have a numismatic item to show. Of course we'll have the regular raffle with tickets you can purchase as well, and the raffle will have extra-special holiday prizes!!

November 2018 — Greetings!

This is a notice regarding the November coin club meeting, scheduled for Tuesday November 13 (2nd Tuesday). Location: community room (clubhouse) at Suntree Village, 1001 SE 15th St., Bend, OR. Thanks again to club member and Suntree Village resident Sterling Respass for making the reservation. Time: 6:30 p.m.

For the program, we’ll revisit a topic presented three years ago … So-Called Dollars, with some emphasis on the new book, So-Called Dollars From The Pacific Coast Expositions, authored by Jeff Shevlin and William D. Hyder.

Coffee and cookies will be available at the meeting. If you would like to bring food, please let me know in advance to avoid duplication.

October 2018 — Greetings!

This is a notice regarding the October coin club meeting, scheduled for Tuesday October 9 (2nd Tuesday). The October meeting will be at the Redmond location, assuming we don’t have a major fire outbreak like we did last year.

Location: PatRick fire facility, 1199 NE Hemlock Avenue, Redmond, OR, at 6:30 p.m. (room usually opens at 6:00 p.m.). As I discovered recently, this location is less than two blocks from the BrightSide Animal Center!

Paul is scheduled to give the program, speaking to us about the U.S. Mint medals commemorating the Native American Code Talkers.

The auction will contain some numismatic books; I’ve set aside about a couple dozen older books that I no longer need, and all will start cheap and plan to sell quickly. To make things go faster, I will likely accept offers on most of the books during the break before the auction.

Coffee and cookies will be available at the meeting. If you would like to bring food, please let us know in advance to avoid duplication.

Also a reminder that the annual fall coin show/convention is coming up in Portland Oct. 19-21 – see http://pnna.org/convention/convention_fall.html.

September 2018 — Greetings!

This is a notice regarding the September coin club meeting, our first after summer break, scheduled for Tuesday September 11 (2nd Tuesday). Location: community room (clubhouse) at Suntree Village, 1001 SE 15th St., Bend, OR. Thanks again to club member and Suntree Village resident Sterling Respass for making the reservation. Time: 6:30 p.m.

This is the annual club meeting where we have the opportunity to briefly report on summer numismatic activities, including the ANA Summer Seminar in Colorado Springs, the ANA World’s Fair of Money in Philadelphia, or anything closer to home, including new acquisitions for your collection. “Show & tell” can also cover a wide range of topics, including numismatic remembrances of 9/11.

Coffee and cookies will be available at the meeting. If you would like to bring food, please let me know in advance to avoid duplication.

June 2018 — Greetings!

This is a first notice regarding the June coin club meeting, our last before summer break, scheduled for Tuesday June 12 (2nd Tuesday). Location: community room (clubhouse) at Suntree Village, 1001 SE 15th St., Bend, OR. Thanks again to club member and Suntree Village resident Sterling Respass for making the reservation. Time: 6:30 p.m.

Former club president Ted Campbell is returning to town for this meeting, and will speak to us about his experiences buying coins and getting great deals on GreatCollections.com, which offers both coin auctions and direct sales. We’re planning to show a few images from the website along with a live demonstration using Ted’s phone.

Note that a couple of 2019 “Red Books” are still available, including a large-print spiral edition.

Coffee and cookies (and maybe a cake?) will be available at the meeting. If you would like to bring food, please let me know in advance to avoid duplication.

May 2018 — Greetings!

The May coin club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday May 8 (2nd Tuesday) at the Redmond location. Location: PatRick fire facility, 1199 NE Hemlock Avenue, Redmond, OR, at 6:30 p.m. (room usually opens at 6:00 p.m.).

The auction will contain a few more items, including proof sets, from the local family collection featured the past three months. The proof sets are 1957, 1959, 1960 (lg. date), 1961 (3 sets), 1962, 1963 and 1964. There is also a 15-coin PDS set of circulated 1952 coins, and a similar 15-coin set containing circulated coins from 1941 (S), 1942 (S) and 1935 (D). At the current price of silver, the 15-coin sets have a bullion value of about $30 each, and the 5-coin proof sets about $10 each.

2019 “Red Books” will be available. I ordered and received 8 regular spiral bound, 2 large-print spiral, and 2 “Mega Red” editions.

The program will either be something that Paul comes up with, or a couple of interesting items from the “Mega Red Book.” Coffee and cookies will be available at the meeting. If you would like to bring food, please let us know in advance to avoid duplication.

The April coin club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday April 10 (2nd Tuesday). The April meeting will once again be in Bend, followed by returning to Redmond in May. Location: community room (clubhouse) at Suntree Village, 1001 SE 15th St., Bend, OR. Thanks again to club member and Suntree Village resident Sterling Respass for making the reservation.

Note that 2019 “Red Books” will probably not be available until May, unless you want to meet me somewhere in Bend after I receive the shipment. I have ordered 8 regular spiral bound, 2 large-print spiral, and 2 “Mega Red” editions.

Coffee and cookies will be available at the meeting. If you would like to bring food, please let me know in advance to avoid duplication.

March 2018 — Greetings!

The March coin club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday March 13 (2nd Tuesday). Due to a conflict at the Redmond location, the March moving has been moved to Bend, at the community room (clubhouse) at Suntree Village, 1001 SE 15th St., Bend, OR. Thanks again to club member and Suntree Village resident Sterling Respass for making the reservation.

The program will be a few more items from the special auction (this time world coins), and a preview of the PNNA convention in Tukwila, Wash., March 16-18, including a preview of the featured numismatic theater presentation, “Robert Scot: First Appointed Chief Engraver of the United States Mint,” by Bill Nyberg.

Coffee and cookies will be available at the meeting. If you would like to bring food, please let me know in advance to avoid duplication.

February 2018 — Greetings!

It's time for the coin club to meet again, this time at the Bend location!

The February coin club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday February 13 (2nd Tuesday) at the community room (clubhouse) at Suntree Village, 1001 SE 15th St., Bend, OR. This is near the busy roundabout at 15th and Reed Market, and is easy to find (see detailed directions on the meetings page). Thanks to club member and Suntree Village resident Sterling Respass for making the reservation.

The program is a special auction of approximately 125 circulated U.S. coins grouped into lots, including Indian and Lincoln cents, Buffalo and Jefferson nickels, Mercury dimes and Standing Liberty quarters. A detailed list has been sent to club members, so you can prepare to bid. All of the coins are from a local family, who will receive 90% of the proceeds.

January 2018 — Greetings!

I hope everyone enjoyed our December meeting and party in Redmond! Although I may have initially said that the January meeting would be in Bend, we would prefer to follow the previous pattern of having the Dec-Jan meetings in Redmond and the June and September meetings in Bend. So, now it's time to go back to Redmond again for the first club meeting of the year. At this point the weather forecast is looking good, unlike last year!

This month's club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday January 9 at the Redmond location. The location is the PatRick fire facility at 1199 NE Hemlock Avenue. The PatRick fire facility is easy to find. You can enter the address at http://maps.google.com to see what it looks like from the street. It's a short distance east of highway 97, north of Antler Ave., and well north of the airport. There is an off-ramp coming from the south (Bend). If you're coming from the north you will need to use a different exit. More detailed directions are posted on the club's website. The meeting will begin at 6:30 PM as usual, however the meeting room should be available at 6:00 PM for early arrivals.

At present, we don’t have a speaker for January. If you would like to speak about a numismatic topic, please let me know. Also, please bring an interesting item for "show & tell" (and/or auction). There will be a prize for "show & tell," awarded in a random drawing to those who participate.

A raffle will be held as usual. The auction, if any, will be held at the end of the meeting.

January is now the month for club nominations and elections for 2018 officers. Please respond if you want to be a club officer.
