President's Message (2019)

President's Message by BCCOCO president Eric Holcomb (elected Nov. 2012, Dec. 2013-2015, March 2017 and Jan. 2018-2019)

December 2019 — Greetings!

The December coin club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday December 10 (2nd Tuesday). This meeting will be at the Redmond location, assuming we don’t have any more bad (icy or snowy) weather.

Location: PatRick fire facility, Redmond, OR, at 6:30 p.m. (room usually opens at 6:00 p.m.). This is the last meeting at the PatRick facility. A new location will be announced for the January meeting.

This meeting is our annual Christmas/holiday potluck, so please bring some hot or cold food item to share. Typically the club supplies meat, drinks and supplies.

Nominations and elections for 2020 club officers will also happen at this meeting.

As always, we’d like to have a good "show & tell" and auction at just about every meeting, so please bring an item for each, or bring one item you'd like to sell and show it first so people know what it is before the auction at the end of the meeting. I'll have my camera ready to photograph your item. There will be an extra prize to show & tell participants in a random drawing. To receive a ticket for this special drawing, you must have a numismatic item to show. Of course we'll have the regular raffle with tickets you can purchase as well, and the raffle will have an extra-special holiday prize!

November 2019 — Greetings!

Good Evening – The coin club will be meeting in Bend again in November, our last planned meeting in Bend for the year.

The November coin club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday November 12 (2nd Tuesday) at the community room (clubhouse) at Suntree Village, 1001 SE 15th St., Bend, OR. Time 6:30 p.m. as usual. Thanks again to club member and Suntree Village resident Sterling Respass for making the reservation. If anyone needs directions to Suntree Village, please let me know.

Former club president Ted Campbell will talk about Morgan Dollars, including the rare 1893-S. Ted reports that Morgans have been "going crazy" in price lately.

As always, we’d like to have a good "show & tell" and auction at just about every meeting, so please bring an item for each, or bring one item you'd like to sell and show it first so people know what it is before the regular auction at the end of the meeting. I'll have my camera ready to photograph your item. There will be an extra prize to show & tell participants in a random drawing. To receive a ticket for this special drawing, you must have a numismatic item to show. Of course we'll have the regular raffle with tickets you can purchase as well.

Annual membership dues remain $10 per person. Club treasurer James Parker will be available to take your dues, if you wish to pay early for 2020. Also, elections of 2020 club officers will take place in December.

The annual Portland fall coin show, jointly sponsored by the Willamette Coin Club and the PNNA, is this weekend, Nov. 2-3.

October 2019 — Greetings!

The October coin club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday October 8 (2nd Tuesday). The October meeting will be at the Redmond location, assuming we don’t have a major fire outbreak like we did in 2017.

Location: PatRick fire facility, 1199 NE Hemlock Avenue, Redmond, OR, at 6:30 p.m. (room usually opens at 6:00 p.m.).

No formal speaker is planned, however we do have a couple of local families with numismatic items in estates which need to be evaluated and/or sold. One is the same family for which I sold items last year; I have just a few more items from that collection. The other is a lady who contacted me after discovering a sizable collection in a safe maintained by her husband. I’m not sure what to expect on that one, but perhaps we can be of some help advising her what to do, after seeing some of the material.

Coffee and cookies will be available at the meeting. If you would like to bring food, please let us know in advance to avoid duplication.

September 2019 — Greetings!

Good Evening – The coin club will be meeting in Bend again this month, our first meeting after summer break.

The September coin club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday September 10 (2nd Tuesday) at the community room (clubhouse) at Suntree Village, 1001 SE 15th St., Bend, OR. Time 6:30 p.m. as usual. Thanks again to club member and Suntree Village resident Sterling Respass for making the reservation. If anyone needs directions to Suntree Village, please let me know.

I’ll have another visual presentation of some Apollo 11 medals I displayed in a collector exhibit at the ANA convention in August. There will also be an opportunity for reports on any other summer numismatic activities, including the ANA Summer Seminar in Colorado Springs.

Prizes will include Apollo 11 50th anniversary silver rounds.

Annual membership dues remain $10 per person. Club treasurer James Parker will be available to take your dues, if you haven’t already paid for this year.

June 2019 — Greetings!

Good Evening – The coin club will be meeting in Bend again for the fifth consecutive month. This is our last scheduled meeting before summer break.

The June coin club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday June 11 (2nd Tuesday) at the community room (clubhouse) at Suntree Village, 1001 SE 15th St., Bend, OR. Time 6:30 p.m. as usual. I’ll have a visual presentation of some Apollo 11 medals I will be displaying in a collector exhibit at the upcoming Chicago ANA convention in August. This year is the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing mission, and the first men on the moon.

A couple of 2020 “Red Books” are still available, and will be for sale at the meeting.

May 2019 — Greetings!

Good Evening – Although we were scheduled to return to the Redmond location in May, it turns out that both Paul and Keith are recovering from illness or surgery, so we will be meeting in Bend again for the fourth consecutive month.

The May coin club meeting is re-scheduled for Tuesday May 14 (2nd Tuesday) at the community room (clubhouse) at Suntree Village, 1001 SE 15th St., Bend, OR. Time 6:30 p.m. as usual. Thanks again to club member and Suntree Village resident Sterling Respass for making the reservation. If anyone needs directions to Suntree Village, please let me know.

Since Paul is recovering, there will likely be no additional information (or answers) regarding the ANA National Coin Week (April 21-27, 2019) club trivia challenge.

A limited number of 2020 “Red Books” have arrived and will be available, including two each in hardback and hidden spiral (the remainder are the regular spiral-bound editions). I’ll have a few trivia questions prepared based on information in the Red Book.

April 2019 — Greetings!

Due to the rescheduling last month, the April 9 coin club meeting will be our third consecutive meeting at the Bend location. We are scheduled to return to the Redmond location in May.

The April coin club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday April 9 (2nd Tuesday) for at the community room (clubhouse) at Suntree Village, 1001 SE 15th St., Bend, OR. Time 6:30 p.m. as usual. ANA National Coin Week is April 21-27, 2019, with the theme, "Discover the Past, Envision the Future." I requested a club packet from the ANA. Don't forget to let me know about your 2020 Red Book order (if desired). I only have a couple of responses so far, so I won't be ordering many books unless there are more orders.

March 2019 — Greetings!

The March 12 coin club meeting has been moved to the Bend location due to the possibility of other activity (for example, related to the weather emergency) at the Redmond facility. I will give a brief preview of the Tukwila PNNA convention, including especially the collector exhibiting and judging seminar in the numismatic theater.

The March coin club meeting is now scheduled for Tuesday March 12 (2nd Tuesday) for at the community room (clubhouse) at Suntree Village, 1001 SE 15th St., Bend, OR. Time 6:30 p.m. as usual. Thanks again to club member and Suntree Village resident Sterling Respass for making the reservation. If anyone needs directions to Suntree Village, please let me know.

This is also the week of the PNNA annual spring convention near Seattle. See http://www.pnna.org/convention/convention.html for information. The convention opens on Friday, March 15.

January/February 2019 — Greetings!

It's time for the coin club to meet again, this time at the Bend location!

Time 6:30 p.m. as usual. Thanks again to club member and Suntree Village resident Sterling Respass for making the reservation. If anyone needs directions to Suntree Village, please let me know.

I am preparing a short illustrated program on British Conder (not Condor!) Tokens. They have become quite popular in recent years. If you have any, you’re welcome to bring one or more for show & tell.

Coffee and cookies will be available at the meeting. If you would like to bring food, please let me know in advance to avoid duplication.
