President's Message (2017)

President's Message by BCCOCO president Eric Holcomb (elected Nov. 2012, Dec. 2013-2015, March 2017)

December 2017 — Greetings!

I hope everyone enjoyed our November meeting at the Bend location! Now it's time to go back to Redmond again for the final club meeting of the year, which is the Christmas/Holiday party in Redmond. At this point the weather forecast is looking good, unlike last year!

So, this month's club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday December 12 at the Redmond location. The location is the PatRick fire facility at 1199 NE Hemlock Avenue. The PatRick fire facility is easy to find. You can enter the address at http://maps.google.com to see what it looks like from the street. It's a short distance east of highway 97, north of Antler Ave., and well north of the airport. There is an off-ramp coming from the south (Bend). If you're coming from the north you will need to use a different exit. More detailed directions are posted on the club's website. The meeting will begin at 6:30 PM as usual, however the meeting room should be available at 6:00 PM for early arrivals.

The party is in the usual potluck format, with the club supplying meat (ham) and beverages, and members bringing other dishes/desserts.

In addition to the party, please bring an interesting item for "show & tell" (and/or auction). There will be a prize for "show & tell," awarded in a random drawing to those who participate. As part of his items to show, Harold promises to “have some information on the 1870, 1871, and 1872 Indian Head Cents.”

A raffle will be held as usual, but with increased prizes, including hopefully a gold item. The auction, if any, will be held at the end of the meeting.

November 2017 — Greetings!

It's time for the coin club to meet again (for the first time since September), this time at the Bend location!

The November coin club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday November 14 (2nd Tuesday) at the community room (clubhouse) at Suntree Village, 1001 SE 15th St., Bend, OR. This is near the busy roundabout at 15th and Reed Market, and is easy to find … see the detailed directions below. Thanks to club member and Suntree Village resident Sterling Respass for making the reservation.

The program will be mostly informal, however, I am planning to give an updated version of the “U.S. Trade Tokens” talk I gave three years ago. If you have any interesting trade tokens, please bring them along for the “show & tell.”

Coffee and cookies will be available at the meeting. If you would like to bring food, please let me know in advance to avoid duplication.

As always, we’d like to have a good "show & tell" and auction at just about every meeting, so please bring an item for each, or bring one item you'd like to sell and show it first so people know what it is before the auction at the end of the meeting. I'll have my camera ready to photograph your item. There will be an extra prize to show & tell participants in a random drawing. To receive a ticket for this special drawing, you must have a numismatic item to show. Of course we'll have the regular raffle with tickets you can purchase as well.

October 2017 — Greetings!

The meeting scheduled for October 10, 2017 in Redmond was unexpectedly cancelled due to use of the facility for firefighting purposes.

This month's coin club meeting was scheduled for Tuesday October 10 at the Redmond location.

Unfortunately I will be unavailable and won’t be able to attend this meeting, so Paul (as club VP) will conduct the meeting, assuming Paul is available. Paul sometimes also has a presentation topic, otherwise the program will be informal, featuring the items you bring to share. I will obtain prizes for the meeting, and make arrangements to deliver them in advance.

Would you like to have a special weekend meeting for buying, selling and trading among club members again this year? If so, please let it be known on Oct. 10, so that a date can be reserved. At present, I should be available any of the weekends in November.

Enjoy the meeting, and I’ll see you again in November, or possibly at the PNNA/WCC coin show in Portland, Oct. 21-22 (see http://www.pnna.org/convention/convention_fall.html)

September 2017 — Greetings!

I hope everyone enjoyed summer (and perhaps the solar eclipse), despite the recent smoky air. Now it's time for the coin club to meet again, this time at the Bend location!

The September coin club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday September 12 (2nd Tuesday) at the community room (clubhouse) at Suntree Village, 1001 SE 15th St., Bend, OR. This is near the busy roundabout at 15th and Reed Market, and is easy to find … see the detailed directions on the calendar page. Thanks to club member and Suntree Village resident Sterling Respass for making the reservation.

The program will be informal … you can talk about any numismatic (or eclipse) experiences you had during the summer, and I’ll say something about the ANA convention in Denver that I attended. There is usually also a report from Walter on ANA Summer Seminar.

A limited number of eclipse “coins” (see our website homepage for photos) from Mountain High Coins will be available at a reduced price, and at least two of the coins will also be in the raffle, along with a silver round.

June 2017 — Greetings!

I hope everyone enjoyed our May meeting in Redmond; now it's time for the coin club to meet again, this time at the Bend location! This will be our last meeting before summer break.

The June coin club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday June 13 (2nd Tuesday) at the community room (clubhouse) at Suntree Village, 1001 SE 15th St., Bend, OR. This is near the busy roundabout at 15th and Reed Market, and is easy to find … see the detailed directions on the calendar page. Thanks to club member and Suntree Village resident Sterling Respass for making the reservation.

The program will be informal … I’ll show a review of some of the better “show & tell” items photographed in the past several years, and you’re also invited to bring new items.

ANA topics: This month’s meeting is also your final opportunity to supply your ANA membership number, so that the club receives a $5 credit on its club membership. We’ll also discuss candidates for the ANA Board of Governors election.

May 2017 — Greetings!

This month's coin club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday May 9 at the Redmond location. The location is the PatRick fire facility at 1199 NE Hemlock Avenue. If anyone still needs directions to this location, please let me know, or see the club’s website. The meeting will begin at 6:30 PM as usual, however the meeting room should be available at 6:00 PM for early arrivals.

The program will be “Proper Use of 2x2's" by Howard K. Paul may also bring us up-to-date on the annual National Coin Week club challenge.

Please bring an interesting item for "show & tell" (and/or auction). There will be a prize for "show & tell," awarded in a random drawing to those who participate. The auction, if any, will be held at the end of the meeting.

A limited number of 2018 spiral-bound “Red Books” will be available for $10 each.

April 2017 — Greetings!

I hope everyone enjoyed our March meeting and delayed holiday party in Redmond; now it's time for the coin club to meet again, this time at the Bend location!

The April coin club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday April 11 (2nd Tuesday) at the community room (clubhouse) at Suntree Village, 1001 SE 15th St., Bend, OR. This is near the busy roundabout at 15th and Reed Market, and is easy to find … see the detailed directions on the calendar page. Thanks to club member and Suntree Village resident Sterling Respass for making the reservation.

The program will be informal … we’ll attempt to answer the ANA’s 20-question National Coin Week club trivia challenge, and I’ll briefly report on the recently completed PNNA show in Tukwila, Washington. (National Coin Week this year is April 16-22, and the theme is "Conflict and Courage: Money and the Military.")

Coffee and cookies will be available at the meeting. If you would like to bring food, please let me know in advance to avoid duplication.

I'd also like to have a good "show & tell" and auction at just about every meeting, so please bring an item for each, or bring one item you'd like to sell and show it first so people know what it is before the auction at the end of the meeting. I'll have my camera ready to photograph your item. Also, and perhaps most important, this month we continue the practice (now over a year old) of giving out an extra prize to show & tell participants in a random drawing. To receive a ticket for this special drawing, you must have a numismatic item to show. Of course we'll have the regular raffle with tickets you can purchase as well.

March 2017 — Greetings!

This month's coin club meeting is currently scheduled for Tuesday March 14 at the Redmond location.

This is supposed to be the month that we finally get to do everything the club had originally planned for December … a potluck (although we’ll now call it a “Spring Equinox Celebration” rather than a “Holiday or Christmas Party”), club officer elections for this year, and a special raffle featuring a 1/10-ounce U.S. Gold Eagle! Also the annual National Coin Week 20-question challenge, if available.

As far as I know now, the party is in the usual potluck format, with the club supplying meat and beverages, and members bringing other dishes/desserts. If I hear anything different, I’ll let you know.

In addition to the party, please bring an interesting item for "show & tell" (and/or auction). There will be a prize for "show & tell," awarded in a random drawing to those who participate. The auction, if any, will be held at the end of the meeting.

February 2017 — Greetings!

To keep everyone up-to-date, I have been able to reschedule the next coin club meeting for Tuesday evening, Feb. 21, at the Bend location (Suntree Village). This will hopefully avoid any conflicts with your Valentine’s Day or other activities. It will be an informal meeting. If you would like to speak about your favorite numismatic topic, please let me know in advance. We can use speakers for this year’s meeting, and it doesn’t have to be anything elaborate.

The postponed holiday prizes, potluck and “Spring Equinox Celebration” are scheduled for the March 14 meeting in Redmond. Note that the PNNA annual convention in Tukwila, Washington (near Seattle) is early this year – March 17-19, so it would be just after our March meeting.

Sorry about all the meeting changes – it’s been one of those years!

December 2016 / January 2017 — Greetings and Happy New Year!

Note: This meeting was postponed until January 10, and postponed again until March.

I hope everyone enjoyed our November meeting at the new Bend location! Now it's time to go back to Redmond again for the final club meeting of the year, which is the Christmas/Holiday party in Redmond.

So, this month's club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday December 13 at the Redmond location.

Since there could be a few inches of snow by then, please do check the website (and your email) the day of the meeting to make sure we’re still “go.” We do understand that some of you may be unable to attend.

A raffle will also be held as usual, but with increased prizes, including hopefully a gold item. The auction, if any, will be held at the end of the meeting.

December is also the month for club nominations and elections for 2017 officers. Please respond if you want to be a club officer; I’m willing to step down.
