President's Message (2014)

President's Message by BCCOCO president Eric Holcomb (elected Nov. 2012 and Dec. 2013)

December 2014 — Greetings and Happy Holidays!

I hope everyone enjoyed our November meeting in Bend. Now it's time to go back to Redmond for the club's final meeting of the year in December. So, this month's club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday December 16 at the Redmond location. (As agreed at the December 2013 meeting, we'll alternate meetings this year between Redmond and Bend.) The location is the PatRick fire facility at 1199 NE Hemlock Avenue. The PatRick fire facility is easy to find. You can enter the address at http://maps.google.com to see what it looks like from the street. It's a short distance east of highway 97, north of Antler Ave., and well north of the airport. There is an off-ramp coming from the south (Bend). If you're coming from the north you will need to use a different exit. More detailed directions are posted on the club's website. The meeting will begin at 6:30 PM as usual, however the meeting room should be available at 6:00 PM for early arrivals.

This is also our annual Christmas/holiday party and potluck. The club will supply meat, coffee, soft drinks and utensils, napkins, etc. Club members are requested to bring some other food dish or dessert. If you would like to coordinate to avoid duplication, please respond to this email and I'll try to check every couple days and let you know if there's a duplication.

This month's speaker is expected to be Paul, who will speak about collection insurance. In addition, please bring something to "show & tell" even if you don't intend to sell it. An auction will be held at the end of the meeting if requested. I'll also have my camera ready to photograph your item.

We will also elect club officers for 2015. Although all present board members have been nominated again, additional nominations are welcome. It's also a good opportunity to pay club dues for 2015 if you haven't already. Don't forget that the club also has four new dealer-style display cases. Let us know if you have an event where they could be useful.

Check the club's website, http://www.bendcoinclub.org/, for more general information and some photos from past club meetings. In the event of any meeting changes or cancellations, I will send an email the day of the meeting or sooner if possible, in addition to posting on the website.

Thanks, and see you soon! - Eric Holcomb, BCCOCO president (eric@holcomb.com).

November 2014 — Greetings!

Sorry we weren't able to meet in October, but now it's time for our November meeting, at the Bend location!

The November coin club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday November 18 at the Grange Hall at 6:30 PM, with gates opening around 6:00 PM. If anyone hasn't been there in a while and needs directions, please let me know. This month I'll speak briefly about getting collector exhibits ready for the ANA National Money Show in Portland, March 5-7, 2015. I'll also try to answer any other questions you may have about the Portland show. Coffee and cookies will be available at the meeting. If you would like to bring food, please let me know to avoid duplication.

I'd also like to have a good "show & tell" and auction at just about every meeting, so please bring an item for each, or bring one item you'd like to sell and show it first so people know what it is before the auction at the end of the meeting. I'll have my camera ready to photograph your item.

Although all the current coin club officers have agreed to run again for 2015, additional nominations are welcome and will be accepted this month and in December prior to voting.

October 2014 — Greetings!

Note: The October meeting unfortunately had to be cancelled.

I hope everyone enjoyed our September meeting in Bend. Now it's time to go back to Redmond for October.

So, this month's club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday October 21 at the Redmond location. Coffee, soft drinks and cookies will be available at the meeting.

This month's speaker has yet to be announced; hopefully I'll know soon, otherwise I will fill in and speak myself. Please bring something to "show & tell" even if you don't intend to sell it. An auction will be held at the end of the meeting. I'll also have my camera ready to photograph your item.

Don't forget that the club also has four new dealer-style display cases. Let us know if you have an event where they could be useful.

Also, I was pleased to see some of you at the PNNA/WCC show in Portland Oct. 10-12; see http://www.pnna.org/convention/convention_fall.html.

September 2014 — Greetings!

I hope everyone had an enjoyable summer (which isn't quite over yet). Believe it or not, it's time for the coin club to start meeting again!

Our first coin club meeting of the new season is scheduled for Tuesday September 16 at the Grange Hall at 6:30 PM, with gates opening around 6:00 PM. If anyone hasn't been there in a while and needs directions, please let me know. This month we've scheduled club member Walter Troutman, who attended the ANA Summer Seminar in Colorado Springs, and will speak to us about his experiences and the class he took this year at the Seminar.

June 2014 — Greetings!

I hope everyone has enjoyed our club meetings so far this year; now it's time to return to Bend for our last meeting before summer break. This month's club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday June 17 at the usual time and place for Bend ... the Grange Hall at 6:30 PM, with gates opening around 6:00 PM. If anyone hasn't been there in a while and needs directions, please let me know.

This month we'll focus on tokens, medals and other so-called exonumia, such as wooden nickels and encased and elongated coins. I'm sure everyone has at least a few items in that category, so bring along one or more for show & tell. If I have time, I'll prepare some slides of trade tokens for projection. We'll also have our usual auction, so be sure to bring something for sale as well. Anyone who would like to speak at a future club meeting this fall (Sep.-Dec.), please let me know. Coffee and cookies will be available at the meeting. If you would like to bring food, please let me know to avoid duplication.

May 2014 — Greetings!

I hope everyone enjoyed our April meeting in Bend ... it was quite an interesting Q&A session! Now it's time to go back to Redmond for May, however we're DELAYING the meeting by one week, until Tuesday May 27, due to election night activities on May 20.

So, this month's club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday May 27 at the Redmond location. (As agreed at the December meeting, we'll alternate meetings this year between Redmond and Bend.) The location is the PatRick fire facility at 1199 NE Hemlock Avenue. Coffee, soft drinks and cookies will be available at the meeting.

This month we'll have an informal buy, sell and trade session similar to the special meeting last November, but on a Tuesday evening so most club members will be able to participate. (Sorry if you'll still be on vacation from the Memorial Day holiday weekend, but I couldn't avoid the delay this time.) Please bring sometime to "show & tell" even if you don't intend to sell it. An auction can still be held at the end of the meeting on request. I'll also have my camera ready to photograph your item.

The club also has four new dealer-style display cases, and I'll try to have at least two of them available for use at the meeting. Terms of use by club members will be decided at the meeting.

April 2014 — Greetings!

I hope everyone enjoyed our March meeting in Redmond; now it's time to return to Bend again! This month's club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday April 15 (one week from now) at the usual time and place for Bend ... the Grange Hall at 6:30 PM, with gates opening around 6:00 PM. If anyone hasn't been there in a while and needs directions, please let me know.

This month we've invited Mike from Mountain High Coin for an informative question & answer session. In addition, I have a number of slides of U.S. coins that have been scanned and can be digitally projected, if time permits. We'll also have our usual show & tell and auction, so be sure to bring something. Anyone who would like to speak at a future club meeting, please let me know. Coffee and cookies will be available at the meeting. If you would like to bring food, please let me know to avoid duplication.

Your show & tell item(s) can also be something you intend to sell in the auction. That way, people will know what it is before the auction at the end of the meeting. Need help to determine the value of your item? I have access to the Coin Dealer Newsletter as well as online world coin catalog ... let me know in advance.

Finally, we'll have an update on National Coin Week (April 20-26) and the upcoming PNNA convention in Tukwila, Wash. (May 2-4).

March 2014 — Greetings!

I hope everyone enjoyed our February meeting in Bend ... it was quite interesting! Now it's time to go back to Redmond for March.

This month's club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday March 18 at the Redmond location. (As agreed at the December meeting, we'll alternate meetings this year between Redmond and Bend.) The location is the PatRick fire facility at 1199 NE Hemlock Avenue. Coffee, soft drinks and cookies will be available at the meeting.

This month Keith (who also works at PatRick) will welcome us and give us a talk about "The Internet and Coins." He'll show us the advantages of the Internet and some disadvantages of online information. Paul will also discuss the ANA's 20-question challenge for National Coin Week, scheduled for April 20-26. The NCW theme this year is Coin & Country: Celebrating Civic Service, in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy half dollar.

I'd also like to have a good "show & tell" and auction at just about every meeting, so please bring an item for each, or bring one item you'd like to sell and show it first so people know what it is before the auction at the end of the meeting. I'll have my camera ready to photograph your item.

February 2014 — Greetings!

I hope everyone enjoyed our January meeting in Redmond; now it's time to return to Bend again! This month's club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday February 18 (less than one week from now) at the usual time and place for Bend ... the Grange Hall at 6:30 PM, with gates opening around 6:00 PM. If anyone hasn't been there in a while and needs directions, please let me know. This month we'll probably just have an expanded show & tell (so be sure to bring something), although I've also asked the guy who had the magnets at our December meeting to give a short talk.

January 2014 — Greetings and Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had an enjoyable Christmas holiday season! Believe it or not, it's time for the coin club to start our 2014 meetings!

Our first coin club meeting of the new year is scheduled for Tuesday January 21 at a new location. (Well, actually the same location as the November special meeting, for those who attended.) As agreed at the December meeting, we'll alternate meetings this year between Redmond and Bend, starting with Redmond this month, at the PatRick fire facility at 1199 NE Hemlock Avenue. I plan to post more detailed directions on the club's website. The meeting will begin at 6:30 PM as usual, however the meeting room should be available at 6:00 PM for early arrivals. Coffee, soft drinks and cookies will be available at the meeting.

This month Paul (who also works at PatRick) will welcome us and give us an illustrated talk about "Collecting Eisenhower Dollars." Some have gone up in value by a surprising amount ... it should be an interesting talk.

I'd also like to have a good "show & tell" and auction at just about every meeting, so please bring an item for each, or bring one item you'd like to sell and show it first so people know what it is before the auction at the end of the meeting. I'll have my camera ready to photograph your item.
