President's Message (2016)

President's Message by BCCOCO president Eric Holcomb (elected Nov. 2012 and Dec. 2013-2015)

December 2016 / January 2017 — Greetings!

Note: This meeting was postponed until January 10, and postponed again until March.

I hope everyone enjoyed our November meeting at the new Bend location! Now it's time to go back to Redmond again for the final club meeting of the year, which is the Christmas/Holiday party in Redmond.

So, this month's club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday December 13 at the Redmond location. The location is the PatRick fire facility at 1199 NE Hemlock Avenue. The PatRick fire facility is easy to find. You can enter the address at http://maps.google.com to see what it looks like from the street. It's a short distance east of highway 97, north of Antler Ave., and well north of the airport. There is an off-ramp coming from the south (Bend). If you're coming from the north you will need to use a different exit. More detailed directions are posted on the club's website. The meeting will begin at 6:30 PM as usual, however the meeting room should be available at 6:00 PM for early arrivals.

Since there could be a few inches of snow by then, please do check the website (and your email) the day of the meeting to make sure we’re still “go.” We do understand that some of you may be unable to attend.

As far as I know now, the party is in the usual potluck format, with the club supplying meat and beverages, and members bringing other dishes/desserts. If I hear anything different, I’ll let you know.

In addition to the party, please bring an interesting item for "show & tell" (and/or auction). There will be a prize for "show & tell," awarded in a random drawing to those who participate. A raffle will also be held as usual, but with increased prizes, including hopefully a gold item. The auction, if any, will be held at the end of the meeting.

December is also the month for club nominations and elections for 2017 officers. Please respond if you want to be a club officer; I’m willing to step down.

November 2016 — Greetings!

We have TWO coin club meetings scheduled for this month (November): a special members-only meeting in Redmond on Saturday afternoon, November 12, and a regular meeting at the new Bend location on Tuesday evening, November 15.

The members-only meeting is primarily so you have the opportunity to buy, sell and trade numismatic items among club members. You can invite a friend or two, but it’s not intended to be a public event. Go through your inventory or collection, and have some items ready! (The event has now been held, and was moderately successful. We're considering a small public coin show sometime next year.)

The November coin club regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday November 15 at the community room (clubhouse) at Suntree Village, 1001 SE 15th St., Bend, OR. This is near the busy roundabout at 15th and Reed Market, and is easy to find … see the detailed directions on the calendar page. Thanks to club member and Suntree Village resident Sterling Respass for making the reservation.

By special request, I will give an abbreviated version of my “Collector Exhibit Seminar” which was first presented two years ago in preparation for the 2015 ANA National Money Show in Portland. We’ll focus on how collector exhibits are judged.

Coffee and cookies will be available at the meeting. If you would like to bring food, please let me know in advance to avoid duplication.

I'd also like to have a good "show & tell" and auction at just about every meeting, so please bring an item for each, or bring one item you'd like to sell and show it first so people know what it is before the auction at the end of the meeting. I'll have my camera ready to photograph your item. Also, and perhaps most important, this month we continue the practice (now over a year old) of giving out an extra prize to show & tell participants in a random drawing. To receive a ticket for this special drawing, you must have a numismatic item to show. Of course we'll have the regular raffle with tickets you can purchase as well.

October 2016 — Greetings!

I hope everyone enjoyed our September meeting at the new Bend location! Now it's time to go back to Redmond again for the next club meeting.

So, this month's club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday October 11 at the Redmond location. The meeting will begin at 6:30 PM [now 7:00 PM] as usual, however the meeting room should be available at 6:00 PM [now 6:30 PM] for early arrivals. Updated 10/10/2016.

I will give a short report on this weekend’s PNNA/WCC (Willamette) coin show in Portland (Oct. 7-9), and will try to also have something else, possibly a very short quiz. Please bring an interesting item for "show & tell" (and/or auction). There will be a prize for "show & tell," awarded in a random drawing to those who participate. A raffle will also be held as usual. The auction, if any, will be held at the end of the meeting. And, yes, there will be cookies and coffee, but you’re welcome to bring additional food if desired.

September 2016 — Greetings!

I hope everyone had a great summer break; now it's time for the coin club to meet again, this time at a NEW Bend location!

The September coin club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday September 13 (2nd Tuesday) at the community room (clubhouse) at Suntree Village, 1001 SE 15th St., Bend, OR. This is near the busy roundabout at 15th and Reed Market, and is easy to find … see the detailed directions on the calendar page. Thanks to club member and Suntree Village resident Sterling Respass for making the reservation. We also thank the High Desert Community Grange for the past several years of meeting at their location.

The program will be informal … you can give a brief report on any summer numismatic activities, and I’ll also report briefly on the completed ANA convention in Anaheim, California in August, including the collector exhibits, as well as the upcoming PNNA/Willamette show in Portland in October.

Check the club's website, http://www.bendcoinclub.org/, for more information and some photos from past club meetings. In the event of any meeting changes, I will send an email the day of the meeting or sooner if possible, in addition to posting on the website.

The October meeting will return to the Redmond location on 10/11 (2nd Tuesday), followed again by meeting at Suntree Village on 11/15 (3rd Tuesday). After that, we’ll decide where to have the annual holiday party, and whether to have a special members-only meeting (likely in Redmond) to buy/sell/trade numismatic items.

June 2016 — Greetings!

It's time for the club to meet again (and for the last time before summer break), this time at the Bend location!

The June coin club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday June 14 (2nd Tuesday) at the Grange Hall at 6:30 PM, with gates opening around 6:00 PM. If anyone hasn't been there in a while and needs directions, please let me know. Unless someone else would like to speak, I’ll talk briefly about the upcoming ANA convention in Anaheim, California in August, and the collector’s exhibit of recent Olympic Participation Medals that I intend to show. See https://www.money.org/ for more information about ANA events.

Also, and perhaps most important, this month we continue the practice (now a year old) of giving out an extra prize to show & tell participants in a random drawing. To receive a ticket for this special drawing, you must have a numismatic item to show. Of course we'll have the regular raffle with tickets you can purchase as well. If you provided your ANA number to save the club $5 on dues, you’ll receive an extra free raffle ticket.

May 2016 — Greetings!

I hope everyone enjoyed our April meeting in Bend. Now it's time to go back to Redmond again for the next club meeting!

So, this month's club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday May 10 at the Redmond location.

No formal program is scheduled at this time. Instead, please bring an interesting item for "show & tell" (and/or auction). There will be a prize for "show & tell," awarded in a random drawing to those who participate. A raffle will also be held as usual. The auction, if any, will be held at the end of the meeting. And, yes, there will be cookies and coffee, but you’re welcome to bring additional food if desired. There will also be a brief report on the recent PNNA convention in Tukwila, Washington.

Check the club's website, http://www.bendcoinclub.org/, for more general information and some photos from past club meetings. (April "Show & Tell" photos are now available.) In the event of any meeting changes or cancellations, I will send an email the day of the meeting or sooner if possible, in addition to posting on the website.

If you’re an ANA member, please bring your membership number to the meeting; we save $5.00 on the club’s ANA membership for each individual ANA member. I think that’s true even if you took advantage of the free ANA membership offer.

April 2016 — Greetings!

It's time for the club to meet again, this time at the Bend location!

The April coin club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday April 12 (2nd Tuesday) at the Grange Hall at 6:30 PM, with gates opening around 6:00 PM. If anyone hasn't been there in a while and needs directions, please let me know. This month we'll have a brief program pertaining to the National Coin Week theme of "Portraits of Liberty: Icon of Freedom." We’ll likely discuss the 20-question ANA Club Trivia Challenge as we have in the past.

Also, and perhaps most important, this month we continue the practice (now a year old) of giving out an extra prize to show & tell participants in a random drawing. To receive a ticket for this special drawing, you must have a numismatic item to show. Of course we'll have the regular raffle with tickets you can purchase as well.

In May, we'll meet at the Redmond location again.

March 2016 — Greetings!

Reminder - the remaining 2016 club meetings are currently scheduled for the 2nd Tuesday of each month that we normally meet.

I hope everyone enjoyed our February meeting in Bend, including the world coin identification slide program. Now it's time to go back to Redmond again for the third club meeting of the year!

So, this month's club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday March 8 at the Redmond location. The meeting will begin at 6:30 PM as usual, however the meeting room should be available at 6:00 PM for early arrivals.

I seem to recall Paul offering to give a program, but I’ll confirm that by this weekend. In any event, please bring an interesting item for "show & tell" (and/or auction).

There will be a prize for "show & tell," awarded in a random drawing to those who participate. A raffle will also be held as usual. The auction, if any, will be held at the end of the meeting. And, yes, there will be cookies and coffee, but you’re welcome to bring additional food if desired.

February 2016 — Greetings!

I hope everyone enjoyed our January meeting in Redmond to kick off the new year. As announced, all remaining monthly meetings for this year are scheduled for the 2nd Tuesday rather than the 3rd Tuesday, so this month's meeting is set for Tuesday February 9 at the Grange Hall at 6:30 PM, with gates opening around 6:00 PM. If anyone hasn't been there in a while and needs directions, please let me know, or see the club website. I'll be showing some slides, probably with world coins where you can try to identify the country. Coffee and cookies will be available at the meeting. If you would like to bring food, please let me know to avoid duplication.

I'd also like to have a good "show & tell" and auction at just about every meeting, so please bring an item for each, or bring one item you'd like to sell and show it first so people know what it is before the auction at the end of the meeting. I'll have my camera ready to photograph your item, and there will be at least one prize reserved in a separate drawing for show & tell participants.

January 2016 — Greetings and Happy New Year!

I hope everyone enjoyed our December meeting in Redmond (including the great food), and had a great holiday! Now it's time to go back to Redmond again for the first club meeting of the new year!

So, this month's club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday January 19 (one week from now) at the Redmond location.

This month's meeting is informal, with no speaker currently scheduled. So please bring an interesting item for "show & tell" (and/or auction) instead. There will also be a prize for "show & tell," awarded in a random drawing to those who participate. A raffle will also be held as usual, and club officers for 2016 will be installed. The auction, if any, will be held at the end of the meeting.
