President's Message |
President's Message by BCCOCO president Eric Holcomb (elected Nov. 2012, Dec. 2013-2015, Mar. 2017, Jan. 2018-2019, Dec. 2019, Apr. 2022 and Mar. 2023) Check the club's website, http://www.bendcoinclub.org/, for more information and some photos from past club meetings. In the event of any meeting changes, I will send an email the day of the meeting or sooner if possible, in addition to posting on the website. Eric Holcomb, BCCOCO president (eric@holcomb.com). May 2023 — Greetings! National Coin Week was April 16-22, the 100th annual event, but we still have time to submit our responses to the 15-question Club Trivia Challenge. Paul has been working on this, and hopefully we will coordinate our club's responses at the May meeting. There will also be a brief report on the PNNA Convention held April 14-16 in Tukwila, Wash. One spiral-bound 2024 Red Book remains available. We'll have the other usual meeting activities including a raffle and auction. April 2023 — Greetings! The meeting was held on April 11, but the 15-question Club Trivia Challenge for National Coin Week was postponed until May. (The responses are not due to the ANA until late May.) Red Books ordered in April were distributed, with one book remaining for sale. March 2023 — Greetings! The March meeting has been postponed one week, until Tuesday, March 21, due to snow in the forecast on the originally scheduled date. The meeting will be very busy. Activities include Phoenix ANA report, National Coin Week, club elections, photography of member items, 2024 Red Book orders, raffle/auction, and possibly a guest with items for sale. Sterling won't be there, but there will be a substitute. See you soon! - Eric National Coin Week is April 16-22, the 100th annual event. If you would like to try the 15-question Club Trivia Challenge, let me know and I will forward the PDF file to you. We will coordinate our club's responses at the meeting (or more likely at the April meeting since responses aren't due until May). February 2023 — Greetings! The second coin club meeting of the year was scheduled for Tuesday, February 14, at the usual time (6:30 p.m.) at the Suntree Village community room. Unfortunatrely Eric was unable to attend, and his program on photography of member items has been postponed until March. January 2023 — Happy New Year! The first coin club meeting of the year is scheduled for Tuesday, January 10, at the usual time (6:30 p.m.) at the Suntree Village community room. I'm planning a short presentation of some U.S. colonial coin and token photos which I haven't shown in a while. There will also be the usual "show-and-tell" along with a raffle and auction. If our treasurer doesn't come up with any new items, then I have a few more silver dollars from a local family, along with a handful of other left-over items for the raffle. We also need to elect club officers for this year. Let me know if you are interested in running, if you're not already on the board. (The election is currently delayed due to low attendance in January.) December 2022 — Happy Holidays! The final coin club meeting of the year is scheduled for Tuesday, December 13, at the usual time (6:30 p.m.) at the Suntree Village community room, although you'll likely want to arrive a little early, as this is our annual holiday potluck. The club (via Sterling) is supplying the meat and beverages (along with plates, etc.), so please bring some other side dish or dessert. This is no formal program, but there will be the usual "show-and-tell" along with a raffle. If our treasurer doesn't come up with any special items, then I have a few silver dollars from a local family. November 2022 — Greetings! The coin club meeting at the Suntree Village community room scheduled for Tuesday, November 8 was postponed one week until November 15. This was due to forecast cold and snowy conditions the night of the 8th. There was a "show-and-tell" and photo session. I also discussed a couple of articles recently appearing in Numismatic News, including one about the publication's 70th anniversary. October 2022 — Greetings! Coin club meetings at the Suntree Village community room have been scheduled for the second Tuesday of each month for the remainder of the year, continuing on Tuesday, October 11. Meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. I will be able to attend this month's meeting, and will speak briefly about my recent experiences at the ANA in Colorado Springs and the PNNA fall coin show in Washington State (Oct. 7-9). There should be a raffle and auction as usual. September 2022 — President not available; an informal meeting was held. August 2022 — Greetings! The August 9 meeting will be informal, but will include photography of show-and-tell items, using the "ring light" demonstrated earlier this year. If anyone else would like to speak about a numismatic topic, please let me know in advance. We'll also have the usual raffle, auction and show-and-tell. See you soon! July 2022 — Greetings! The July 12 meeting will be informal, however we will likely have a brief report on ANA Summer Seminar in Colorado Springs (along with the annual coin show held there), plus I will preview a few special coins in this coming weekend's Heritage Auction (Long Beach Expo/Summer FUN Event). We'll also have the usual raffle, auction and show-and-tell. See you soon! June 2022 — Greetings! Since no special program is planned for the June 14 meeting, we'll have an opportunity for an expanded auction, or you can simply bring items you might like to sell for others to look at and perhaps make an offer. We'll also have the usual raffle and show-and-tell. One of the raffle items will be a U.S. Silver Eagle. See you soon! May 2022 — Greetings! Sorry - Late again! As reported by Sterling previously, the Suntree Village community room is open again, and we have been scheduled for the second Tuesday of each month for the remainder of the year, continuing Tuesday, May 10. Meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. If you don't remember how to get there, see the webpage at http://bendcoinclub.org/meetings/calendar.html. I'll be demonstrating the use of a Kodak Ring Light for photography. Please consider bringing a numismatic item or two to photograph. Since the light is only 10 inches in diameter, it's best to avoid large items such as complete sheets or albums of coins. Individual items will work best. Some coins may not show luster well when illuminated from all directions, but we'll try to get the best images. Other items (such as those without luster) will look great with even illumination. April 2022 — Greetings! As reported by Sterling previously, the Suntree Village community room is open again, and we have been scheduled for the second Tuesday of each month for the remainder of the year, continuing next Tuesday, April 12. Meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. I'll be giving the presentation "An Introduction to Conder Tokens" prepared by Conder Token Collector's Club (CTCC) member Paul Dofton, and originally given to the Greater Orange County Coin Club in April 2020 (presumably during a virtual meeting). This is a lengthy presentation, but I'll just be hitting the highlights. The full presentation will be posted on the CTCC website for anyone who wants all the details. March 2022 — Greetings! As reported by Sterling last month, the Suntree Village community room is open again, and we have been scheduled for the second Tuesday of each month for the remainder of the year, continuing this Tuesday, March 8. I'll keep the meeting short. Although one member had expressed an interest in making a short presentation, there is no formal presentation planned, however we'll have a raffle, auction and show-and-tell. Hopefully beginning in April, we'll have some educational programs again. February 2022 — Greetings! As reported by Sterling, the Suntree Village community room is now open again, and we have been scheduled for the second Tuesday of each month for the remainder of the year, beginning with next Tuesday, February 8. Face coverings are currently required except when eating or drinking (so bring some snacks). Meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. If you don't remember how to get there, please see the club website, or let me know. I'll keep the meeting short. There is no formal presentation planned, however we'll have a raffle, auction and show-and-tell. (As it turns out, no auction items were submitted, but the other activities did take place.) January 2022 — Greetings and Happy New Year! Eric notified members of the online meeting scheduled for Jan. 11. Until the club can meet in person again, these are informal 40-minute Zoom meetings. October-December 2021 — Greetings! Eric notified members of online meetings scheduled for these months. September 2021 — Greetings! Unfortunately, the clubhouse at Suntree Village is once again closed due to the recent increase in virus cases. I will probably schedule another online meeting via Zoom, however it won't be on the same evening (Sept. 14) since I have already scheduled another activity. Once I have scheduled the online meeting, I will send the link to everyone on the list. (The meeting is now set for Sept. 28.) Thanks again to Sterling for keeping us advised of the situation regarding the clubhouse (community room). We hope the closure won't last too long. Thanks and have a great Labor Day holiday weekend. August 2021 — Greetings! This month's coin club meeting is scheduled for this Tuesday, August 10, once again at the clubhouse at Suntree Village. The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. If you've forgotten how to get to Suntree Village, see http://bendcoinclub.org/meetings/calendar.html. I'll present a slightly updated version of my talk "Olympic Participation Medals of the Summer Games," which I previously gave in 2012 and 2016. There will also be a short "show and tell," some raffle prizes, and a short auction. Please do use discretion as the virus is still circulating. This is especially true if you're older, have a medical issue, or haven't been vaccinated. We will probably have some more online meetings this fall, since they have been generally successful. We'll revisit plans for the fall, including any plans for a new Redmond site. July 2021 — Greetings! Sterling reports that "Our Clubhouse is open - no restrictions. I have signed us up for the meeting this month ... next Tuesday (July 13)." The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., a half-hour earlier than we had been meeting online. I'll try to keep the meeting fairly short and informal, with a short "show and tell," some raffle prizes, and a short auction. We'll discuss plans for the fall, including any plans for a new Redmond site. See previous messages: 2021 | 2020 | 2019 | 2018 | 2017 | 2016 | 2015 | 2014 | 2013 | 2012 | 2011 | 2010. |
